SESAR (Single European Sky ATM Research)

SESAR is the operational and technological implementation program of the Single European Sky initiative. The aim of this ambitious project is to develop a new generation Air-Traffic -Management system (ATM) capable of ensuring the safety and efficiency of air transport in Europe by 2020 and beyond.

Performance targets for 2020

The goal of SESAR is to develop new technologies and methods that permit rapid information exchange between air traffic controllers and pilots. At the same time, useful information from the operations centers of the airlines, from airports and meteorological services will be integrated in the future. Those measures will then result in the following improvements:

  • Enable EU skies to handle 2-3 times more traffic
  • Improve safety by a factor of 10
  • Reduce by 10% the environmental impact per flight
  • Cut Air-Traffic-Management costs by 50%
